Who's That Girl?

I'm back!!! The only problem is that I am still wearing fake nails and can barely type. I've never had long nails...never, and even though I've been wearing these things for over a week, I still don't know how to operate them very well. LOL
Despite my fake nail fun, the wedding went amazingly. I couldn't ask for anything to be different. Mr. K and I are truly blessed. Our family and friends are incredibly loving and generous and the day wouldn't have been the same without them. I will tell you more, but that may have to wait until these stinking nails fall off!
So, until my fingers return to their normal state, I will continue to check in on you and hopefully will be able to tell you more about the wedding soon. :)

I Got to Thinking...

This past Tuesday was "Adopt the Internet" with Pet Finder. I had also visited Pup Love's blog where she encouraged bloggers to do a week long blog hop that revolved around promoting adoptable animals, but wasn't able to participate because I am still figuring out the wonder that is my Mac's operating system. I just learned how to cut and paste yesterday! :) You can find her here:
Pup Love
I am also a huge fan of Dog Foster Mom's blog and have been a fan of adopting animals from rescues. I adopted Kyo from a Humane Society in Ontario Canada and also got my parents' dog as a puppy from a local Humane Society. When I was in university, my roommates  and I adopted two cats from a cats only rescue organization. In high school I volunteered with my hometown's Humane society, playing with cats and walking/grooming dogs. So, as you can see, I'm a huge fan of no kill rescues and feel very strongly about giving to this particular cause. But ever since I moved to my current location, I haven't been able to get involved with animal focused organisations to the extent that I would like to; mostly due to transportation issues. I sort of put that stuff on the back burner and just assumed that I wouldn't be able to do any volunteering until we moved somewhere more accessible. But after reading Pup Love's blog and witnessing the enthusiasm for "Adopt the Internet," I became inspired and decided to get creative and find a way to volunteer. I started searching local rescue groups and found two that appealed to me.
The first I liked because it is fairly close to where I am living. I figure that if all else fails and I can't get a ride from someone, I can take a cab. I have sent emails back and forth with the head of the rescue and although she seems in need of volunteers, she seems a little overwhelmed. I have volunteered with this kind of organisation before, where there is hardly any structure and everything is helter-skelter. I am a little hesitant to get involved again because the volunteers just get shunted along and no one knows what is going on.  She even told me that they  don't have a volunteer co-ordinator. Perhaps that is a job for me?It also took me contacting her twice before she would commit. Originally, she said that I could come by the facility and meet the animals and get a feel for the place, but in the most recent email she said that she is glad I am volunteering with them and that I have been placed on their volunteer emailing list. I am a bit confused. What happened to me coming in? Doesn't she want to meet me? What if I am not the sort of person they want representing their rescue? I liked this organisation because I read on their website that some work can be done from a volunteer's home. This would work for me and save some cab fare, but I would like to have a bit more information first. I'd like to meet the person in charge too.
I understand that  she is also running a boarding facility/grooming salon on top of the rescue and so perhaps she is crazy busy, but I have volunteered twice to go out there and meet her in person and nothing has come of it. Is this odd to anyone else, or am I just being paranoid? I think I may email her back and say that I want a face to face interview or at least introduction before I commit.
The second rescue organisation is really cool and I am excited to work with them. The person I have been in contact via email asked e to fill out a paper volunteer application, but once I explained that this was not possible, she offered to call me instead. Their website is extremely organised and this person seems a bit more on top of it. I think she is busy too as her emails are quite brief, but they are not impersonal and I feel more comfortable knowing that there is an actual application that you actually have to fill out. I also feel better knowing that I am going to be talking to someone over the phone.
This rescue is breed specific and places their dogs in foster homes. I don't believe that they have a kennel, but I could be wrong. They list a lot of what they need help with on their website and have a full list of the adoptable dogs up.
The organisation rescues Border Collies. I honestly haven't had a lot of interaction with the breed, but it would be neat to get to know another kind of dog. I know they are incredibly intelligent and usually have a herding instinct. They also have a high energy level, which is why most of them get surrendered. Mr. K has talked about us getting one in ten to twelve years-when our fuzzy family has crossed the Rainbow Bridge-but I want more exposure to the breed before we go off and get one. I hadn't had much interaction with Dachshunds before we got ours. I only knew what I had read and although I love these guys with all of my heart, I still think I am a big dog kind of person. I'm not only blind, but deaf in one ear and I can hear big dogs much better than small ones. It's easier to know what they are up to. I also think it would be cool to train a dog from scratch for either Rally or Agility. A Border Collie would be perfect. So, it's with the future in mind, and a really big urge to to do more than just write about how wonderful rescue dogs are, that I have decided to apply to work with this organisation.
I love dogs and know that we can't take on anymore-I would go crazy-but I want to try to help dogs in need in a different way. There were so many Border Collies that were on the website that had been surrendered due to financial changes or people moving into places that would not allow dogs. I have the time right now, so why not use it in a more constructive manner?

Adopt The Internet With Pet Finder

In honour of their fifteenth anniversary Pet Finder is holding an event called "Adopt the Internet." People are encouraged to feature pets on their blogs, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and whatever social media a person may have at their disposal. People are also able to take a pledge that they will tell at least one other person about an adoptable pet on Pet Finder. This pledge not only may help an animal in need of a forever home, but also gets the participants registered for a crazy good pet vaccuum. There are also badges and other fun techy things that I am not able to put up because we all know I am not so technologically inclined, but I wanted everyone to know that I support Pet Finder's Adopt the Internet.
I was hoping to feature an adoptable pet, but again my lack in Mac knowledge is coming back to haunt me. :) That said, you can go to Pet Finder here:
http://www.petfinder.com
and perhaps find an adoptable pet of your choice. I searched for Dachshund within 100 miles of my zip code and was shocked to find that there were over four hundred results, all ranging from babies, mixed breeds and adults.
So, let's band together and Adopt the Internet and help some of these wonderful animals find their forever homes.
Happy anniversary Pet Finder: may you have fifteen more fantastic years.

"What's This Wednesday?"

Welcome to "What's This Wednesday?"! Today I will be putting up one picture for you wonderful people to view. Originally, I was going to post two, but the internet is not cooperating. I may be able to get another one up in a separate post. So, keep your eyes peeled for picture number two.
Once you've looked at them, go to the comments section and tell me what you think they may be because quite honestly, I have no idea what they are. I like to take my own pictures and as a totally blind photographer, you never know what you are getting; a floor, the wall, someone's foot? LOL Regardless I hope you enjoy.
Also, just a reminder that VIP Products has generously donated a prize for this month's "What's This Wednesday" give away. I don't know what it is, as my order has not arrived yet, but I will let you know as soon as it gets here. Please go to their website and browse the fantastic selection of dog toys and beds. I really like their toys because they have a toughness rating for each toy and a Junior line that is for puppies or small dogs.

And now for the photo:

Happy Wednesday!!!! :)

We Are Honoured

In the last week "At A Glacial Pace" has received two honours. there are visual badges to go with these honours of course, but after messing with my Mac for an hour trying to figure out how to display them, I have decided just to tell you about them.
The first honour was our very first blog award. It was given to us by Brooke and her gang over at

It was an "Awesome Blog" award and we were very excited to be picked. This award requires that you tell people seven things about yourself that people may not know and give fifteen other blogs the award. The first I can do, but giving the award to fifteen other blogs may be difficult. I can name them, but putting up their links may be tricky. I don't know everyone's URLs. So, I'm just going to tell you seven things and sit down one day to figure out how to link more effectively to other people's blogs. :) :)

Seven Things you May Not Have Known
1. I went blind at the age of three due to Retinalblastoma (AKA cancer in the retinas). This means my eyes are prosthetic. Cool eh? LOL
2. My very first pet dog was a 90 pound yellow lab named Sasha. He was my best friend for 13 fantastic years.
3. My roommates and I adopted cats when we were in university-named Loki and Sisu. When my roommies moved to Scotland to complete their Master's degrees, I took the cats. Unfortunately upon meeting and falling in love with Mr. K, I gave the cats up because he is incredibly allergic to them. We both loved them, but he suffered. He never asked me to give them up: I did it so that he could breathe. Thankfully my parents took them and they are happy little kitties. (Sorry. That was a long one).
4. My favourite colour is purple.
5. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and a College Diploma in Massage Therapy.
The last two will be about Glacier since the blog is named in his honour.
6. Glacier has an enormous head, which has gotten him the nicknames "fat head" and "bobble head." All said lovingly of course.
7. Glacier can probably destroy any toy you put in front of him. He ate through:
a hockey puck in less than ten minutes,
ripped the biggest black Kong you can get into two pieces in about fifteen minutes,
he crunched his way through an elk antler in approximately twenty-five minutes...Etc.
So, now you know more about Glacier and I. :) Thanks Brooke.

The second exciting honour came from one of our favourite blogs to follow written by Dog Foster Mom. She listed "At A Glacial Pace" as one of five featured blogs for the month of March. The other four blogs are really interesting and I am glad she featured them. Never mind that...I am honoured that my blog was featured with those other fantastic blogs. I was so surprised and excited to see my blog up there I had to read the post twice. Dog Foster Mom has a fantastic badge that tells everyone that you are a "featured blog," but me being technologically uninclined, can't figure out how to show it. I also can't seem to link to her blog either. LOL
That said, if you want an interesting read, head over to Dog Foster Mom's Blog. You can probably get there through my comments as she leaves excellent questions and comments for me all of the time. And for you screen reader users out there, she also-under the instruction of Rudy's Raiser-puts descriptions in her photo links. That way, you know what the pictures are. :)
Again, thanks Dog Foster Mom!!!
There you have it; our first bloggy honours. :)

"What's This?" Wednesday

So I've devised my own Wordless Wednesday, but since I don't know what any of my pictures are, I'm going to post one every Wednesday and let you lovely people guess. Thus, "What's This" Wednesday. Now hopefully I can get the photo to download. :)
Happy guessing

Screen Reading software and A Girl Who Doesn't Know What She Is Doing

You would think that after blogging for four or so years I would know how to work all of the fancy features that Blogger offers You would also think that after being blind since I was three I would know how to operate a computer using screen reading software by now...you would think.
Well, I'm here to tell you that I am a lost cause. Up until recently I had not used any of Blogger's extra features and just spewed out my soul in the hopes of it serving as a sort of therapy. If you read some of my older posts from a few years ago, I don't have titles or even the time stamp set up properly. I guess I can give myself some slack in that department. I have managed to figure out quite a few things just through trial and error-like "following." Do you have any idea how long it took me to figure out how to "follow?" Now that I know though, I am a "following" fiend: it could be considered unhealthy. ;) Anyway, so I think I'm doing pretty good in that department, sort of. I still have not discovered how to post links within the post or pictures, but I'm working on it. Soon enough, adorable fuzzy faces will be staring back at you, but until then, my riveting words will have to do. But I am digressing.
So, we know that the Blogger thing is a work in progress, but what about my inability to operate a screen reading program? For all of you non-blinkies out there (Blinky, a term we used in the competitive sporting world for blind folk), screen readers are programs that blind and visually impaired people use to operate a computer. It talks to us, telling us what we are typing or reading what is on the screen. Hence, screen reading software.
There are a few different types of screen readers out there, but the most common one used with Windows is called Jaws, which is what I used to use. More recently though, I have switched to a Mac and I am now using the accessible feature called Voice Over that Apple designed for their computers. It's actually quite impressive how accessible Apple's products really are. But I am not here to promote Apple. They don't pay me yet. I am here to tell you that I have no idea what I am doing. :)
I have only been working with my Mac, named Marvin, since June of 2010 and it has been interesting teaching myself how to operate it. I've mentioned before that I am not good with electronics and that I prefer living, breathing creatures. See? If I knew how to use the linky thingy, I could have linked to that previous post. But alas, I do not.
The point of this gigantic introductory verbal diarrhea is that I have followers who I can't figure out who they are. That annoys me greatly. Blogger tells me to click on their image and their information will pop up. Yeah, right. Good luck working with images as a blind person using a screen reader. I have eight wonderful Followers, but I have one mystery one. I can't see the pictures to put a face to the name and I can't click on the image to get more info, so I propose that all of my fantastic, loyal and dedicated readers leave me a comment one day so I can click on your name and know who you are. That is, if you want me to know of course. ;)
Either that or if a fellow screen reading software user out there knows how to fix my problem, please let me know.

Still Broken

Error BX-Y67GRO is still ever so kindly popping up every time I try to "edit" anything. I can post and that is about it. This is starting to get irritating as I am trying to add pictures and new pages to this blog to add some more dimension. How am I supposed to make things more readable if Blogger won't let me "edit" anything?
Don't even get me started on Blogger's "help" section. Why isn't there a "contact us" or "tech support" link? Maybe there is, but I can't just find it.Anyway, up until now I haven't had to use the forums, but because of this error I have attempted to circumscribe the inaccessible "help" forums. Not all of the fields are able to be manipulated with Voice Over and thus I can't convey my exact problem, or leave all of the information Blogger requires to fix my problem.
So, perhaps it's not Blogger's fault. Maybe It's a problem with the Mac software. Voice Over works horribly with Facebook, but Facebook also uses obscure and strange programming. Listen to me all techy talking over here. Don't get to excited. This is about as technologically inclined as I get. Give me a living, breathing, heart beating creature any day. Even if it's the worst behaved creature-I can work with that. Objects that aren't supposed to think for themselves, but seem to anyway, freak me out. All of my electronic equipment has behaved strangely at some point or another and I can't seem to fix it on my own. Usually I have to have Mr. K, King of Technology himself, come over and try his hand. He usually does the same thing I have been doing for a half an hour and the damn thing will spring into action, all ready to serve.
This brings about another thought-perhaps it's not Blogger or Voice Over and it's me; more like user error. Really, it could be, but there were people on the forums that said they were getting the same error message. Their errors rectified themselves in a few days though and mine has been like this for about a week. Maybe it's a combination of all three. The forum is slightly inaccessible and, particularly for Voice Over, and since I'm not a Technology Queen I can't think creatively enough to get the information out there that needs to be present in order to get this damn thing fixed...
Did you get all that?

It's Me Again: Non-Techy Girl

It looks like it is a day of blogging.
I have been getting an error every time I try to "edit" anything. I can do things with posts, but "design" and "settings" are not working. I get the error code: BX-Y67GRO and I have no idea what that means. I looked on the forums and it appears other people have been having this problem, but I can't get any answers as to how to fix it.
Any of you know what is going on?
