It's 2013. All I can say is "wow." We had a very good New Year's Eve, celebrating in a local pub that looks out on to the water. There was a band playing, good food, even better company and a really relaxed yet festive atmosphere. It really was an enjoyable evening, even if I did wear five inch heels and walked all of the way there and back. Oh the things we do for fashion.
In my defense, they are the prettiest red heels ever!
Anyway, the point is, it was a very good night.
But what is this "Dogmany" you may be asking.
In the UK, or at least in Scotland, New Year's Eve is called Hogmany. It's a huge deal here with fireworks being fired off from the castle every hour and a gigantic street party. Apparently, this year's Hogmany street celebration pulled in somewhere around 75 thousand people. This still doesn't explain Dogmany right? I'm getting there.
Dogmany is a fun day spent in one of the city's larger parks where sled dogs race and the general public are encouraged to bring their dogs. It's held on New Year's Day and as I'm sure you can guess, we went. There's no way there is going to be a massive gathering of dogs and me not be there.
My parents and I hopped a cab downtown and brought Hermione and Otis along for the day. Mr. K was not feeling well-no, it wasn't from drinking too much the night before-and so Roscoe stayed home with him. We met a couple of our friends at the park and spent some time watching the sled dogs racing. There were races between teams of three and then races between teams of two. In one of the races with teams of three, a kid of about ten won the heat. It was pretty exciting to watch. There were so many different types of sled dogs around I hardly knew what to do with myself. It was amazing. Of course there were plenty of pet dogs about and I spent a lot of time petting other people's dogs and having photos taken of mine. There was even a novelty dog show set up and I entered both dogs.
Hermione was to be shown in the "Waggiest Tail" category and Otis was entered in to the "Prettiest Eyes" class. There was some time to kill before the show so we wandered around a bit more, getting stopped about every fifteen feet for someone to pet/stroke/hold/take a photo of Otis. Hermione was admired as well, but it was a different kind of dog person who appreciated her. It was actually interesting to take notice of the people who were drawn to each dog. Otis, for example, drew in families, young couples and just your average dog lover. Hermione on the other paw, drew in people who were breed experts, serious gun dog handlers and people who are a bit more serious about their dogs. Of course little girls were smitten with her too because of her fluffy ears and feathery tail. She truly is a princess.
When it came time for Hermione's class to be shown, I missed the call for us to enter the ring. It was really noisy, Otis was being kidnapped by a small child and I was honestly distracted by a fourteen month old Dog DaBordo who weighed 3 and a quarter stone. For those of you who don't know "stones" that is, in my opinion, weight measurement for bloody huge. I was disappointed she didn't get to go in the ring, but Otis was up next and he was a hit.
The "judge" had us all enter the ring and line up. Then she went around looking at each dog and squeaking a small squeak toy at them. This was to get the dogs to look at her so she could judge who had the prettiest eyes. The funny thing was even though it was fun and we were joking around, waiting for her judgment was actually tense and I got a bit excited. The judgment came back that a gorgeous Springer Spaniel had the prettiest eyes since he/she sat perfectly still staring at the judge during the squeakathon. Otis, my little charmer, won second prize and a mixed breed of some sort won third. When the winners were announced we all lined up to receive our prizes and the dogs were given medals and a certificate. A goodie bag with a few treats was also part of the loot. Then, the dogs, and owners I suppose, got to strut their stuff around the ring to show off for the crowd. It probably was one of the most fun things I've done with my pet dogs and to be honest, it's kind of addictive.
A lot of novelty dog shows are run in the name of charity in Edinburgh and I've thought of entering my dogs into more just for the fun of it. It would give me a reason to work with them on their obedience, a way to meet new people, give to a good cause and have fun while I'm at it.
By the end of Otis's victory lap, my feet were frozen and I think my parents had turned into snow people, or at least frost people, as well. We said our good-byes to our friends and found a cab to take us home.
It was a warm shower and a hot cup of tea for me and a well deserved treat, courtesy of Otis's winnings, for the puppies. We all spent the rest of the evening curled up on the couch just relaxing as it had been quite an eventful previous evening and next day. I think it was the perfect start to 2013.
Happy 2013 to all of you and wishing you the best in 2013.
hugs from Jess, Hermione, Otis, Roscoe, Mr. K, Hamish and Lola

Of Course It's About Dogs
Today's post will definitely give you your fix if you're craving doggie news. It seems like my life the past couple of days has been entirely doggie centred. No different from most days I suppose, but yesterday was an extra dose of dog.
First thing's first, I said I'd bake cookies for a Guide Dogs fundraiser that was to be held on Saturday-AKA, yesterday. I thought I'd bake the treats in the morning in order to ensure freshness, but both batches were a bust. My Garlic, Cheddar Chicken bites didn't bake long enough and then my Pumpkin Peanut Butter cookies baked too long. That'll teach me to try to multi-task while baking for an event.
Despite my baking fiasco, I was ready to be picked up by 11.45 to head to the venue. I spent an afternoon at a working dog show, attempting to raise funds and awareness for Guide Dogs UK. The event was quite interesting as I've never been to a dog show before and I certainly got my fill of various breeds of dogs. Of course I was working very hard fundraising, but part of fundraising is chatting with people right?
...and petting their dogs...right?
I saw some of the coolest breeds, including a Mastiff who weighed 240 pounds. That dog was a stinking pony! He was beautiful though. I also got to pet one of those dogs who look like they have dredlocks. I can't remember what they are called...some kind of Afghan something or other. I asked how long it took to bathe one of them and was told that it can take anywhere from two to three hours.
Yikes!
There was also a lot of beautiful Border Collies, Huskies, Great Danes and Newfoundlanders that I just had to pet. Oh, and I can't forget the champion Pyrinese I got to pet. She was beautiful.
We did manage to raise some money, but I think most importantly Guide Dogs was recognised as being out in the community and was maybe given some publicity. I also think it's good to put faces behind the organisation and there were at least three guide dog owners there with their dogs. I was there too, but certainly minus a guide dog. I was impressed by all of the dogs' behavior considering how many strange dogs were about, sniffing/barking/peeing on things. The three workers did their jobs and for the most part, kept their noses to themselves. A few of the puppies in training were a bit more excitable, but that's to be expected.
It was interesting for me to see each dog/handler team and the various breeds. Not one of those dogs were the same. There was a female Golden Retriever German Shepherd cross. Apparently Guide Dogs has had a lot of success recently with this mix of breeds. She was lovely. There was another female, but she was a Golden Retriever Lab cross. She was adorable with gigantic front paws. I've seen a few of those at LDB and they all seemed to be great workers. Then there was a male Flat Coated Retriever. I had never seen that breed before so it was a treat to pet him.
My guide dog trainer, and dude who is currently looking for my replacement dog, was my eyes for most of the afternoon. He was also my driver and we got to talking. Apparently, a week or so ago a potential dog came up for me, but only three days after my trainer heard about him, it was discovered that the dog has skin allergies. He's being tested to see what exactly he's allergic to, but it would seem that I will miss out on this one. The trainer sounded disappointed. I asked him if it were a food allergy and he said they weren't sure yet. I feel as though that if it were a good match and it was only food related, that I could deal with it. It's nothing to have a dog on a good diet and I don't mind cleaning ears frequently. I clean my dogs' ears about once a week now.
The trainer is always hesitant to give out dogs that have these conditions for a few reasons. First, a person who has been waiting for a long time may think that he/she can take on a dog with that sort of issue and will say yes, only to discover later that he/she really can't handle it. Then, everyone feels guilty/bad and the person just ends up on the waiting list again.
Second, it's hard to tell how an allergy, or something of that nature, will progress. If we can control it with food now, will it stay that way for all of its life or will it become worse and worse?
Roscoe has food allergies and we control it by feeding him a fish based food, or raw feeding, and treats that I've made. Anything else and it flares up. However, I can see where the trainer is coming from and he is the expert. Fingers crossed that someone else comes up soon or that it is discovered that this guy's allergies aren't that bad and that diet can fix it.
That said, if it were discovered that his allergies could be controlled by diet, it doesn't mean I'll like him. Here in the UK, we get to meet our potential dogs first and decide whether or not we think he/she will work for us. If we think so the dog goes away for six weeks to complete his/her formal training and then we go into training with him/her. I very much appreciate that I get to be a part of the selection process. I just have to make sure that when the time comes for me to choose, I attempt to be as objective as possible.
So that's where that stands.
Mr. G has also sent an update as to his busy life as "Archio dog." It would seem that he is working in the archaeology field with his new dad and mom and being very helpful when it comes to digging; maybe a bit too helpful in some spots. His jaws of steel have also worked their magic and he has managed to destroy a hard hat...a hard hat! You know, the things that are supposed to protect your heads if machinery fall on them? Either that hard hat sucked or Glacier's got some impressive chompers. My vote lies in the latter.
As for the crew that we have now: Otis is growing like a weed. He turned four months old today and despite several growth spurts he's still quite small. That said, it's surprising how heavy he actually is. With how cold it's been out he has needed a sweater to do his business outside. We felt a bit ridiculous getting a sweater for a Bulldog, but Otis is now the proud, or not so proud, owner of a "Build a Bear" skull and cross bone hoodie. He looks damn cute in it. It was cheaper to buy him a hoodie from the children's store than to get him a dog sweater. Once he grows out of this hoodie we'll have to buy him a dog specific coat, but for now, he will keep wearing his Build a Bear hoodie. So cute!
And what about the other two?
Let's just say Roscoe has been nicknamed "Ranger Roscoe" and Hermione has been deemed "Hermione, the great Huntress." Whenever I go for evening walks, I always take both Roscoe and Hermione. It's kind of dark down on the cycling path and I feel safer having the bigger presence of Roscoe roaming with us. This evening I took the two out for an off leash run and both dogs assumed their respective roles.
Roscoe was off scouting through the under brush and popping out to check on me while Hermione was off holding perfect points at birds, squirrels and bugs. We stopped to talk to a woman who has a JRT named Florence, who was shocked to see Hermione point at a fleeing squirrel. She may be a toy breed, but her hunting instincts are still there.
Otis isn't quite big enough to accompany us on our longer walks, so we haven't determined his sudo personality yet, but if I were to call him anything right now it would be:
"sleepy, lazy Otis."
He definitely lives up to his Bulldog breed description.
As for Hermione the Great Huntress, she didn't catch anything. Probably because she was wearing her bear bell so that I knew what she was up to. Ranger Roscoe didn't seem to think there was anything threatening in the under brush. We have seen foxes in that general area and so I get a bit nervous walking later in the evening, but there are way less people you have to navigate at those times. As everyone knows, I am probably one of the worst cane users in the world. That not only applies to university campuses, city streets and shopping centres, but also to bike paths. So, our walk was quite relaxed and uneventful; despite the fireworks going off in close proximity. Neither Roscoe or Hermione were bothered by the loud bangs or bright lights. I'm not surprised by Roscoe's lack of reaction, but that seemed odd for Hermione. She's a nut about everything. Maybe she felt safe with Ranger Roscoe at her side. ;)
So, was that enough "doggie dish" for you?

A Little Favor?
Hello to all of the dogs and cats out there who somehow manage to get their paws on their humans' plastic moneys.
I am here to ask you afavor...
I have been, and it's been for a while, thinking about opening an online store with all kinds of great things for you...the dogs and cats. There are a few human things too, but mostly for the important beings in the household. I have recently discovered a retailer that has some really cool stuff and was wondering if, you have some time, could you go internet browsing on the site and look at all of the fantastic things for sale?
Then, I would appreciate it if you could email me at:
glaciers DOT goodies AT gmail DOT com
and let me know what a few of your favourite things are. I.E., things that you would buy on a regular basis. And then, in a different list, the things that you absolutely love, but would buy as a very special treat to yourself. I also want to know about a few products that you would absolutely not buy and why.
Ssshhhhh...don't tell the humans. They may get protective of their plastic moneys.
Anyway, thanks in advanced for your help.
Happy browsing.
The shop can be found

"A Bit Odd"
Today's post can be found on my other blog that is dedicated to my triathlon/marathon training. The post can be found
here.
It is just a small blurb about the Paralympic Games opening ceremonies tonight and how it's "a bit odd" not being there. If you can, make sure you tune in to watch the second largest sporting event in the world.
Happy reading and watching! :)
PS: We were approved to foster and now we are waiting for our first Greyhound. :D

Lost for Words
Have you ever felt like your thoughts or words just won't come out or lacked the motivation to put things into writing? Or, perhaps you've felt like whatever you have to say just isn't interesting or worth writing down?
I've sort of felt like this the last week or so. I'm not really sure why. I've had a few things I could write about, but for some reason, every time I start writing I end up deleting the draught and just not bothering. I haven't even updated my Facebook status in over a week.
Like I said, there doesn't seem to be a particular reason. I've been busy and probably could write a whole bunch just on one day's happenings, but it just won't come out. Even now, it seems like I am repeating myself.
I think part of it is that Mr. K's been really busy trying to get his last assignments finished for this term. That means, Glacier, Hermione and I have been spending very little time at home so that the flat is quiet for him. I've taken my lap top with me, but most of the time I don't even take it out.
I've been working away at the fleece tugs that I'm making to raise funds for Labrador Retriever Rescue Scotland and have attempted a few dog cookie recipes. Surprisingly, both batches have turned out quite well. I did manage to cut the end of my thumb while slicing up sweet potatoes for the sweet potato treats, but other than that, there haven't been too many mishaps. That is a miracle since I am a complete mess in the kitchen. In fact, the Garlic, Cheese and Chicken Bites I made two nights ago smelled so good Mr. K and I wanted to eat them. The whole flat smelled as though I had been making home made garlic bread. I baked a batch of Apple Cinnamon cookies yesterday-a recipe of my own design-and that smelled good as well. The dogs all seem to like the treats too. So, that is a bonus.
Aside from the tugs and treats, I've also added hand tied, fleece blankets to the products available. Hermione has a green and pink one and she loves it. I had her sitting on my lap, wrapped up in it, and even though it barely covered my knees, I was super cozy. My next project is to make myself one; in purple, of course. I just have to go buy enough fleece and the right colours.
All of the dogs are doing well. Glacier is loving all of the work he has been doing with us getting out every day. Hermione is getting better at the forward momentum necessary for going for a walk and I'm thinking of purchasing her an "Easy Walk" harness. Despite her being small, she has a good pull and she's only going to get bigger. Of course she won't be the size of a German Shepherd or have the pull of a Husky, but I'd prefer that she didn't constantly be pulling. It's better for not only my shoulder, but her little body as well.
Speaking of Miss Hermione: I had noticed that she was scratching an awful lot. She also seemed to have a lot of dandruff. In order to combat her itchy skin, I bought some cod liver oil and have been giving her the supplement twice a week. It seems to be helping. She kind of stinks like fish after eating it-pretty much for the whole day-but if it keeps her from scratching her skin off, I think we can live with a bit of stink. The boys have been getting the supplement as well.
Cinnamon is another supplement all dogs get once a day. I had read some really good information about the benefits of cinnamon and instantly starting adding it to their food. Obviously, with any supplement, cinnamon and cod liver oil included, should be given in specific measurements and shouldn't be given to dogs with certain health conditions, but for my dogs, both supplements are fantastic. I'd post the link to the pages about the benefits of cinnamon and cod liver oil, but ever since Blogger decided to force everyone over to its new, user unfriendly interface, I can't post photos or links.
My battle with the University of Bozos continues with me trying to explain that what they are doing is illegal. A few more emails have gone back and forth and I don't think they understand that I'm not contesting the importance of contacting the disability office in order to have your needs met, but refusing to process a disabled student's application until he/she has established whether or not the disability office can accommodate him/her is illegal. The law basically says that the university has to find a way to accommodate the disabled student, not that the university can decide whether or not they can accommodate and then base their acceptance of the student on that.
The University of Bozos tried quoting their application policy that "strongly suggests" students contact the disability office during the application process.
Um, last time I checked, "strongly suggest" does not mean "must" or "has to." These idiots have no idea what they are talking about. Regardless, my email response that I copied and pasted on another post must have them in a tizzy because I have received three email responses from three different people and I haven't even replied yet. I'm carefully crafting that response with links to the laws and quotes from their own policies that contradicts what they are saying.
Despite me saying that I didn't have anything to say, it would appear I've written quite a bit. It's slightly disjointed and a bunch of topics all jumbled together, but it's something. :)
Happy Friday, everyone.

Let's Go Walkies
Part of my desire to get a puppy was not only for its undeniable cuteness, sleepless nights, sharp teeth and sweet, sweet puppy breath, but so that when she grew up big enough, I'd have someone to take for a walk. Now, I know what you're thinking: you're thinking "Jess, you walk a dog everywhere you go." Okay, so I sort of do, but I'm not really walking Glacier as we're walking together; big difference. In a way, it's almost better to have someone to walk with, but it has its downfalls.
When Glacier and I are out walking, AKA getting from point A to point B, we are on a mission. We have a specific destination. Glacier is also not allowed to greet other people and/or dogs, nor is he allowed to sniff, pee, chase leaves Etc. Now, I'm all for good leash manners, especially when you have a steam roller of a puller like Glacier, but there is a sort of segregation between you and other dog owners because, in essence, your relationship with your working dog is not the same as theirs with their pets. This distinction and distance is good: it is what allows Glacier to do his job. It is for these reasons, that I've wanted someone to take for walks and Hermione is now that someone.
This morning we went on a very long and enjoyable walk. Glacier's work was quite impressive, especially since I asked him to guide us through a local park, full of frolicking dogs, cyclists and people just walking in general. It was a pretty busy place for 7 AM on a misty, chilly Tuesday morning. The walk probably took us about 45 minutes or so and that's with stopping twice for Hermione to meet another dog. It also included me asking someone for directions to ensure I was on the right path. Once inside the park, I lose all of the signals I use to keep Glacier moving in the right direction; traffic flow, sidewalk, curbs Etc. We were walking down a paved path, but it has branches and sometimes very subtle turns that I would not notice. Accidentally wandering down one of these branches would put me at the complete opposite end of the park. Turns out we were moving in the right direction, which made me very happy.
Hermione did a great job with her forward momentum. Walking forward has been something we've been working on because she initially wanted to prance every direction, sniff every sidewalk slab and eat everything in sight. For the most part, she kept her paws pointed ahead and her nose up. I was impressed with this latter feat as she is only three months old and technically a part of the "gun dog" category; AKA hunting breeds. She did very well meeting two other dogs, which I was also very happy to see. It is very important to me that Hermione is socialised with as many dogs as possible, not only because she is going to be a therapy dog, but because I think it is a very important part of being a responsible dog owner and having a well rounded adult dog. Prevention is the best method of training and teaching your puppy/dog to play nice with others is the first step in ensuring your animal doesn't have dog sensitivity issues.
This morning's walk was the first in many to come. I've made it my goal to walk Hermione at least twice a day in order to ensure she gets the stimulation, exercise and socialisation she needs. It's been something I've been working up to, going on shorter walks every second day or so, but I think she is big enough now to be able to handle the physical activity. Besides, her energy level in the flat as of late has been through the roof. This tells me she is ready for more frequent and longer walks. I really enjoyed myself and I think both Glacier and Hermione did too. They both passed out when we got home and Hermione devoured her lunch. I think there are a lot of benefits for everyone involved, including me, to be out and about. I even feel better just from that one walk. I've also decided that we need to try to go early in the morning.
First of all, I'm more of a morning person and more apt to do the longer walk early in the morning. Second of all, there are a lot less children out that early in the morning. Not that I don't like kids, or that I don't want Hermione exposed to them, it's just easier because there aren't any little ones trying to interact with Glacier; or parents with kids in "prams" everywhere, but my anger towards prams is for another post. ;) I've also noticed that the people out walking their dogs that early in the morning are actually quite friendly and happy. I don't know what it is, but people out with their dogs early in the morning are in a much better mood than a lot of people later in the day. Of course I am generalising, and this observation does not apply to everyone. Lastly, it's because you never know when it's going to rain here and it seems that the likelihood of precipitation is lower that early in the morning. It had begun to drizzle just as we walked the last two blocks to our home and it's been pouring ever since. I'm determined to do our shorter walk tonight, but I may need to invest in rain gear for both dogs and a pair of good Wellies for me.
There's something satisfying about starting a new goal; especially one that is just so enjoyable for me. Have you set yourselves new goals lately? Do you have any kind of routine with your dogs that is enjoyable for you?

PSA: Glacier's Goody Shop Opened
I'm not sure if anyone would be interested, but I've created a Facebook page for the fundraiser I'm doing for LRRS. I realise that most of the people who read this blog are in North America and can't really purchase any of the products, but there's a lot more going on over there than just selling stuff. I am trying to add health facts from time to time; photo competitions and/or postings; engaging conversations Etc. So, if you care to check us out, here is the link:
to Glacier's Goody Shop.
We'd love for you to join in and have some fun. Plus, a photo of Hermione was posted on the wall by a friend so you can finally see her. :)

Back in the Kitchen
Ever since I started fundraising for Labrador Retriever Rescue Scotland, I've been experimenting with ways to make healthy, tasty dog treats. It's not always easy as most recipes call for flour or other wheaty things that a lot of dogs are allergic to. I'm really trying to find ingredients that shouldn't bother most dogs, throw them together and hope they make good cookies. So far, my banana/peanut butter/yogurt/cinnamon cookies turned out really well and today I tried another made up recipe, which I think was quite successful. The only thing I'm worried about is that these treats aren't pretty.
In the grand scheme of things, that's not a big deal if I was just feeding them to just my dogs, but trying to market these things is difficult when there are so many other treats out there in fun shapes, pretty packaging and fancy decorations. My treats don't even have a uniform shape. They are healthy and tasty and definitely low calorie, which means dogs can have more than one, but they don't look like anything a person would buy from a professional; not even if it's for charity. I don't know how to remedy this. I don't want to sacrifice quality, taste and health for shape, colour and visual appeal. The whole point of under taking this was to produce a treat that was worth eating, not a cookie that is just corn glossed over. Okay, that was a bit pretentious, but you know what I mean.
Let's take my recipe from today, for example.
Ingredients: butternut squash, cinnamon, honey...oh, that's it. Simple, identifiable ingredients all with nutritional benefit for your dog.
Nutritional value, for me, means that I selected each ingredient because of what it can positively contribute to the dog's diet. Since there are only three ingredients, let's examine each briefly.
Honey: a small amount of unpasturised honey contains anti-bacterial properties. It seems to help battle yeast infections. Roscoe has mild allergies to wheat, corn and perhaps some environmental allergies, but when he is eating a teaspoon of honey a day, his allergies stay pretty cleared up.
Cinnamon: I can't say enough about this spice. It helps regulate insulin levels, so it is good for diabetic dogs, and people too. It also acts as an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflamatory agent. A lot of "antis." It is also thought to assist with heart health. There is a word of caution with cinnamon though because it does assist with thinning the blood, and, could potentially cause uterine contractions in pregnant dogs. So, if you are going to administer cinnamon as a daily dietary supplement, research it first. Basically, cinnamon is good for dogs with arthritis, Diabetes and allergies. A little bit on a treat, in my opinion, very good.
Butternut squash contains anti-oxidants, a good source of vitamin C and an excellent source of fibre. It too has a multitude of health benefits.
So, what do you get when you combine all three ingredients together?
A very "super food" type treat that looks...well, ugly.
The treats are made in my handy dandy dehydrator and so the butternut squash ends up curling up and twisting all around, but not in a pretty twirly or curly Q fashion. Oh, no. They ugly! I tried one and they are tasty and Glacier, Roscoe and Hermione all thought they were great, but they are just so visually unappealing. Because I can't see, I have no idea, but I suspect the dehydrating process probably discoloured the butternut squash as well, or perhaps the honey and cinnamon turned it a funny colour, but if it did turn a strange colour, how do I sell shriveled up, brown dog treats that are supposedly a "super food?" I'm just saying. :)
Would you like to know how to make these super food treats? That way you can see for yourself how UGLY they are.
Step 1: slice butternut squash in to pieces. Depending on what kind of treat you want, your treat will be either sliced thinly or thickly. I made both because I have big dogs and a little one. The thicker pieces are meant to be something for Glacier and Roscoe to work at, while the thinner pieces are for Hermione. These are probably more of a treat rather than a "training" reward kind of cookie because they take too long to consume.
Step 2: sprinkle thin layer of cinnamon over each slice.
Step 3: spread thin layer of honey over cinnamon.
Step 4: put in dehydrator and let dehydrate until it reaches the consistency you want. The longer you leave them in there, the tougher they will be.
So, there you have it: my recipe for my super food treat that is UGLY.

Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?
So, as all of you know, thanks to Hermione, I spent some time in the kitchen attempting to make some hypoallergenic, gluten/grain free treats for my pups. Surprisingly, they didn't turn out too badly and, as was requested, I will share the recipe with you. It's more of a "sort of do this" thing than an actual recipe. So, bare with me. :)
(I don't have a name for these. Any suggestions)?
Ingredients: bananas (how many bananas you use, depends on how many cookies you want. I used two bananas and got about a dozen or so treats), smooth peanut butter (natural if you can manage it), plain yogurt (I used organic), cinnamon.
Instructions: chop banana into slices Aprox. a quarter of an inch thick. (You can cut them however you want, but just know that the thicker they are, the longer it will take for them to dehydrate).
Spread thin layer of peanut butter on to each slice of banana. On top of thin layer of peanut butter, spread thin layer of plain yogurt. Sprinkle cinnamon on top and place into dehydrater. Let dehydrate for Aprox. 10 hours or until all ingredients have become hard.
Note: if the peanut butter is spread too thick, it will not lose its moisture and remain slightly oily and sticky. This is fine. The texture can be whatever you want it to be. If you want softer cookies, take them out of the machine sooner.
Bananas were used for flavour and potassium. Peanut butter was used for flavour and smell. Plain yogurt was used to encourage good intestinal health and cinnamon was used to promote good circulation.
***
My boys loved them and swallowed them in one gulp. So, these would be good training treats for big dogs. However, Hermione took hers off into a corner to chew on it. It took her about five to ten minutes to consume the small treat. So, these would not be good training treats for smaller dogs or small breed puppies as it would take too long for them to consume.
They are a healthy, low fat treat that your dogs should love. Enjoy. :)

My Latest Endeavor
It's been a busy couple of days. Roscoe had a great birthday, complete with frozen peanut butter stuffed Kong and a hamburger patty chargrilled just for him. No, we normally do not feed our guide dogs human food. If we give them stuff we eat, then they will think that that stuff is always for them. This could be problematic in a public situation and so, it is a good rule of thumb to keep the human food for the humans.
However, on his birthday we went out for supper-Tenie, Carmen, Mr. K and I-and we told the server it was Roscoe's birthday. I'm not really sure how it came up, but then he was asking if Roscoe and Glacier could have a meat patty. He assured us it was just meat and no extra sauces. They make their burgers by hand and so we said it was fine, but the boys had to wait until we were finished eating and ready to leave. So, Glacier and Roscoe ate burger off of a plate, in a restaurant! What have I become?!
Anyway, aside from Roscoe's birthday, we celebrated Mr. K's yesterday; I gave someone a massage on Sunday and we had a great Easter dinner as well that day; and much much more. That is why I haven't been here to tell you all about it.
Not only have we been celebrating birthdays and eating burgers, but I've taken on a new fundraising effort for Labrador Retriever Rescue Scotland; the organisation I volunteer with. It's been something I've been thinking about for a while now and the details only fell into place on Saturday. I've been blowing up the LRRS Facebook page with announcements and also the dog trainers' Facebook page I've been invited to be a part of.
So, what exactly is it that I'm doing?
The fundraiser is twofold. First, I will be making fleece tug toys for dogs. The tugs come in a variety of colours and sizes and can come with or without tennis balls. I had made a small one for Hermione and when I saw her and Glacier playing tug-of-war with it, I realised just how sturdy it was and that it would be a good item to sell as a fundraiser.
Tug toys are not the only product available for dogs. I am also making gluten/grain free treats. These treats are good for training as well as just a treat and are totally natural. These cookies also come in a variety of flavours.
Of course there are goodies for humans too. Hand made soaps, bath salts and foot soaks are all available for purchase in a variety of fragrances and sizes.
Thus far, the tug toys have been the most popular item, with fourteen orders coming in within the last two days. All of the profits made from the products will go directly to Labrador Retriever Rescue Scotland to assist with medical care of rescued Labradors, food and boarding until they can find their new forever homes and whatever else that is needed. I'm really excited about this project and can't wait to start making all of the items. I just have to wait for my materials to come in now. I've been trying to think of ways to spread the word, as I'd like to raise as much money for LRRS as possible, and so far, Social Media has been a big help. I've also thought of contacting the local pet food store where we buy all of our dog stuff from, to see if they would be willing to sell the tug toys. I think the treats may be a no go in the pet store as there is probably some kind of packaging/labeling requirement. Do you have any suggestions?
Well, with that in mind, I must be off to buy fleece and tennis balls so that I can get started on making my first order. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. :)

Blogville PAWTY: Funds Raised
All I can really say is: "wow" and "thank you!"
Because of the generosity of the members of Blogville, we have raised 232 dollars for Dog Foster Mom's much needed privacy fence.
You guys rock!
No, really. You do!
Without your support this event would not have been as successful as it was. You guys are truly amazing.
Not only did we raise 232 dollars, but some of the raffle prizes won by some Blogville citizens were kindly donated to dog Foster Mom's foster dogs. Thank you to those individuals who gave so selflessly.
Again, I want to thank everyone for their "pawticipation" because without your dedication, posting and just plain fabulous attitudes, this event would not have been as fun and successful as it was. I have made many new friends along the way and I was completely blown away by the genuine caring and compassion that is alive in Blogville. People outside of the blogging community should really take a page from the Blogville book on how to care for your fellow companions, whether they are two or four legged. I don't think I will ever find the words to express how truly grateful I am.
Do you think we should do it again? ;)
PS: My apologies for taking so long to post how much we had raised. I was waiting for two personal donations from non-blogging friends.
Because of the generosity of the members of Blogville, we have raised 232 dollars for Dog Foster Mom's much needed privacy fence.

Kissing Booth Results
As requested by the handsome Garth Riley, I have compiled a list of those pups who received kisses in the Kissing Booth and how many. Each girl was given a kiss by Sarge as he wanted to make sure everyone felt included and his bestest girl, Zona, followed in his pawsteps. She bestowed a kiss on every boy in The Kissing booth. The list of names below are the Kissables who received kisses beyond these "1 a piece" via Sarge and Zona. Zona and Sarge's kisses have been included in the tally of the Kissables below. Confused yet? Basically, there was a lot of kissing going on in Blogville. :)

Pawsome Winners of Pawsome Raffle Prizes!
Hello again, Blogville. I am back to announce the winners of our wonderful Raffle prizes that were so generously donated by a myriad of dog specific companies and every day people.
The response to the raffle prizes was astonishing and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for purchasing so many tickets. All of the funds we have raised through this event will go towards helping Dog Foster Mom build her much needed privacy fence and every ticket you bought helped us with this goal.
Thank you so much!
***
The winners were selected by Glacier himself. I placed the names of each participant on the tickets for the item they wished to win, placed those in a bowl and had Glacier pull them out. This was an interesting method, but we have the results for you.
Are you ready?!
***
Classic Kong + Mini Kong key chain: The winners of this prize are some great members of Blogville and some serious PAWTY animals. One even ended up in the punch bowl. Do you know who I am talking about?
Congratulations Amber Daweenie and Max Daodder Weenie for winning the Classic Kong! Please have your mom email me so I can get your address. :)
***
Our next item was the beautiful hand dyed scarf from the Scottish artist, H Gibson. Blogville probably doesn't know the winner of this item, but I do. It's Glacier's Grandma (AKA my Mom Sophia).
Congratulations Mom! I don't need your address. I lived there!
***
Our next item was our most popular prize and one little fellow was very convinced that he must win it. The funny thing is, his purchase of 15 tickets for the Kong Wobbler paid off.
Congratulations Baloo! You are the new owner of a Kong Wobbler and your new Mama gets the Mini Kong key chain. (Are you listening to me Mr.! It is a key chain! You get the Kong Wobbler and your new Mama gets the key chain. It is not for you, okay)?
***
The Mighty Lion was won by a very mighty dog. I know he'll have hours of fun with it. Maybe he'll share with his bestest girl?
Congratulations Sarge! If you are anything like Glacier and Roscoe, you will get plenty of use out of the Mighty toy line. Please have your mom email me with your address so I can mail you your prize.
***
The Valentine's Gift pack is going to a very deserving fellow, who works tirelessly for Blogville. He was one vigilant guy at the PAWTY, making sure the closet wasn't occupied and mopping up things that needed mopping. This pack should help him unwind. Perhaps he'll be willing to share with his puppy?
Congratulations Mr. Mayor Frankie!
I'll need your address too please
.***
The humans definitely need to unwind after that PAWTY as much as the critters do. Our next winner won the hand made bath salts and soap; fragrance to be determined by the winner.
Congratulations to Garth Riley's mom! Please email me so we can discuss your fragrance preference and also so I can get your address.
***
Also for the humans, a print made by H Gibson of a cat and dog. Perhaps Shasta would like to hang this on her palace wall?
Congratulations to the Team Beagle Bratzs' mom! Please email me so I can send you your prize.
***
Last but certainly not least is the Ultimate Tug Ring, a favourite in our house. This toy will give the winners hours and hours of fun. Roscoe may want to come visit the winner, not only to play with the Ring, but because he thinks the winner is very pretty.
Congratulations to Maggie Mae and Max.
***
And so, these are the pawsome winners of the Pawsome raffle prizes. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets. You guys are great!!!!!

Announcing PAWTY King and Queen Winners!
Hello beautiful citizens of Blogville. I want to start this post by thanking everyone out there for all your support and participation in the Valentine's Day PAWTY. The event was huge and it wouldn't been so without you guys! I really appreciate all of your posts, comments, assistance and donations. It was my first ever Blogville event and I really wasn't sure how it would go, but you people-and critters-are amazing and this event was more than I could have dreamed. Words cannot really adequately capture how grateful I really am. You guys rock!
Now, I am sure you are all waiting to find out who your Valentine's Day King and Queen(s) are? Yes, I said "Queens."
You voted and there was a tie between two lovely Ladies and when put to the question of whether or not to have two queens, Blogville said "yes." So, that is how it will go for Valentine's Day 2012.
To be honest, the race for Queen and King titles was incredibly tight and we almost had six winners, with just one vote separating them all.
I'd like to give Sarge and Zona an honourable mention as they nearly won the competition and were barely beat out by our three winners.
Congratulations to Sarge and Zona for being the runners up for Valentine's Day King and Queen 2012!!!!!!!
As I said, the three winners were ahead of Sarge and Zona by only one vote. When I saw the results, I considered knocking out two of the winners and replacing them with Sarge and Zona, but you voted Blogville, so I left it alone. Politics wouldn't be politics without some tampering? ;)
Without any further rambling by me...
The first Queen of Valentine's Day 2012 is Shasta from
Team Beagle Bratz!
I think her adorable photo won everyone over. :)
Congratulations Shasta!!!!!!! I know you will rule Blogville Valentine's Day with grace and beauty and a gentle paw.
The second Queen of Blogville Valentine's Day 2012, is my very own Jetta.
I'm not sure where all of the votes for Jetta, a retired guide dog and Senior citizen, came from, but I know she will be thrilled to find out she is Co-Queen with the lovely Shasta.
She will be a great ruler because of the years under her collar; so to speak.
And, who is the lucky guy who gets to rule Blogville Valentine's Day 2012 with these two incredible Ladies?!
Well...erm, the winner of Valentine's Day King 2012 is...
GLACIER!
*Now do you see why I was going to knock off two of the winners? LOL*.
Glacier is a goofy guy with a big heart and I know he will be honoured to rule Blogville Valentine's Day 2012 with Queen Shasta and Queen Jetta.
So, there you have it!
Our three Royals for 2012. Since Blogville is a democracy, if anyone would like to have a re-vote (minus Queen Shasta, who is solidly planted on her Valentine's Day throne), speak now or forever hold your peace.
Congratulations to the winners! :)

After The PAWTY
Good mornin' Blogville. I hopes everyone slept a lot after the PAWTY. I knows I did. Miss Nola had me dancin' all night long! Hers is a great dancer! I knows Roscoe needed some extra sleep after dancin' all night with Maggie Mae. They looked so goods together, didn't they?
Wells, actually, everyone looked so goods! Did you see the corsage that Sarge picked out fur Zona?Sasha and Remington, Puddles and Max, Shasta and Shiloh with their two dates, Benny and Lily, Mayzie and Casey, Amber and her two dates Chip and Thai...so many beautiful Blogville couples! We even had some kitty furriends come too! Did you see Nelly? That cat's got the moves. My girl was impressed that even Jetta, bein' a young 11, chose to come out and bust a move too. That girl can dance! No wonder I had big paws to fill. I am thinkin' hers was tryin' to impress the Mr. Garth Riley after he gave hers a kiss in the Kissin' Booth.
Amber, did you get yours cake? Mr. Pip was very busy at the buffet: I hopes his tummy is doin' all rights today.
I think my girl needed a break too because hers may have gotten into those coffee martinis Alien was mixin' up. Hers said they were tasty. I was also impressed him managed to fit into those leather pants all night long!
I thinks everyone was havin' a good times. I saw Asta, shakin' her groove thang and Max Daodder Weenie was spinnin' his date all around the dancin' floor. It was sure a nights to remembers!
We has so many folks to thanks that I'm not sure wheres to start. First of all, did you see how beautiful the hall looked? Frankie's brides, Ruby and Penny, decorated the hall just fur our PAWTY. Frankie, you are one lucky dude. And, our wonderful Blogville Happy Valentine's Day/Happy birthday cake was deliciousnesses and it was made by Wyatt and his mom just fur our PAWTY!
Paws Bang did greats keepin' us movin' and thanks to Lucy fur steppin' in when the members of Paws Bang needed a breaks. It was so much fun and it wouldn't been the same if the wonderful citizens of Blogville hadn't come out in full forces! Some folks couldn't even dances because of a hurt paw, but they came anyway-Jack, it was great to see you. It's not Valentine's Day without Chocolate (Labrador) kisses.
I stopped my dancin' at one point to go make use of those poles and trees that Frankie mentioned, and stopped by the Aquatic centre. It looked like our shelled furriends were havin' a good time too. Those of you who pitched in to dig that special area for our aquatic furriends did a fantabulous job!
Nows, I knows there is somethin' you have been holdin' your breath fur, rights?
Who won King and Queen? Wells, you shall wait no longer! My girl has tallied the votes and the results are as follows:
*Drum roll please, Sarge*!
Wells, erm, you're gonna have to waits a bit longer. You see, we haves a tie. Yup. Two lovely Ladies have the same amounts of votes There's no denyin' who the King is, but we needs to find his Queen
So, what do you propose we do bouts this, Blogville?
My girl was thinkin' the two Ladies in question could tell you bouts themselves and we can vote, or, we can have two beauties ruling Valentine's Day together?
What ya thinkin Blogville? Let us know in the comments section of this post.
Raffle prizes are still available for ticket buyin' until Saturday. So, if there's anything else that you are wantin' to buy tickets fur, go ahead!
Nows, I am thinkin' I needs to get back to a nap because I may have gotten into those coffee martinis too.

Good afternoon Blogville!

I do have to takes a break from dancin' just fur a minute to reminds all citizens of Blogville to please vote fur your Queen and King. The votes are all funnies, with a couple of ties and my girl is thinkin' we may have to comes up with a tie breaker if some more votin' doesn't happen.
So, we've moved the votin' station into the hall so that's you don'ts have to abandon your date fur too long and come and vote!
We also haves a tasty treat for everyone comin' up soon. We didn't want any of Blogville's citizens to go hungry while out PAWTYing. So, come back to check out what we haves in store fur you.
Oh, and don'ts furget to be kissin' your date either. Jetta just received five kisses from Garth! Hers is so excited because hers is a senior citizen you knows and although hers knows her is beautiful, hers wasn't sure anyone still appreciated her loverliness.
Well, I better be gettin' back to dancin' befure someone else tries to scoop up my Nola. Have you seen her dress?!
Oh, and Roscoe and I have a very special kiss for Amber Daweenie. Hers needs to have her first mornin' kiss fur good luck. XXXXXXX

I also stopped over at The Kissing Booth to give hers a kiss, because if you remembers, a kiss first thing on Valentine's Day mornin' is good luck.
Roscoe also wants to make sure Maggie Mae knows hims is so happy that hers picked hims to be her date. Hims went over and gave her a mornin' kiss to make sure she gets good luck and bought her a yummer too!
Don't worries Ladies, my girl (who Roscoe calls the Mama), made sure our teeths were brushed befure we were goin' over and kissin' you. Good luck kiss or not, you wouldn't want to be dealin' with our mornin' breaths.
My girl would like to wish everyones, four and two leggers alike, a Happy Valentine's Day. Makes sure to kiss your loves this mornin' and gets some good lucks!
We'll be back laters with more Valentine's Day goodness!
Happy Valentine's Day, Blogville!

As you all knows, we have one more day befure the big PAWTY! Oh, I am so excited! That means, one more day befure I get to go dancin' with my loverley Nola.
That also means, one more day to get your votes in fur Valentine's Day King and Queen. You have until midnight EST on February 14th to make sure your favourite for King and Queen are elected. We will announce the winners on the morning of February 15th.
The Kissing Booth will stay open until the end of the week just in case you didn't have enoughs time to get your smooches in. Plus, my girl says, why shoulds we save kisses fur only Valentine's Day?
The raffle prizes will also be available until the end of the week. The winners of each prize will be announced on Saturday. So, don't furget to get your tickets!
There has also beens some interesting criminal activity in Blogville and Sarge is on duty to makes sure all citizens are obeying the laws. Frankie's cousin will be in court this mornin' to plea her case. Fur all of the details go visit Mayor Frankie's blog or check out our Daily Results page.
Sarge is doin' his bestest to ensure all citizens are safes on Valentine's Day. If you knows of any questionable behaviors, please inform Sarge so he may makes the arrest.
With that in minds, I must be gettin' over to the court proceedings.
