It's a tough answer and one that I don't think will ever be answered :)Brooke, Cessna, Canyon & Roguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14249788764859520347noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19662648.post-52689323817731871512010-10-21T14:39:33.868+01:002010-10-21T14:39:33.868+01:00It's hard to say. Like I said, there are exceptions to every rule-if you trained yoru own dog, it would be a great dog, but there are plenty of people out there whou shouldn't be training their won dogs. And like you said, a lot of dogs from organisations who shouldn't be out there either. Sure Jetta and Cessna were crazy, but they were never aggressive. It's such a slippery slope. If we say "no" to self trained dogs, then we are enfringing on people's rights and freedoms, but also perhaps keeping the public safer. But then again, maybe we aren't. I think there should be a study done on self trained Vs. organisation trained. The problem with that is that, as you said, the field is so unregulated. Where would the data for the research come from? And who the hell in their right minds would finance a research project like that? lol I just do know for sure that retired dogs should tay retired. And, if you have one service dog that should be enough. There was one woman on the forum who had two. Now that is just greedy. They can train dogs to serve more than one function-it's harder and it takes a very special dog, but they can do it.Just Jess for nowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07250050080448577898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19662648.post-30691548803058173282010-10-18T18:13:12.178+01:002010-10-18T18:13:12.178+01:00I agree with you regarding your beliefs surroundin...I agree with you regarding your beliefs surrounding a retired dog being retired, I'm not sure what Cessna would think if I had decided to take Phoenix out sometimes or even what Phoenix would have done since the whole reason for retiring him was because he no longer had the desire to work. but, I'm not sure I totally agree with your thoughts on owner trained dogs as I feel there are many more program trained dogs out there that shouldn't be working (at least in Canada) compared to owner trained ones I know. since there are rules in Canada surrounding a dog needing to have something identifying them as working dogs I think it is harder for the "fakes" to get away with things. also the service dog laws here are a lot less vague than in other countries such as the US where store owners must fear retaliation even just for asking someone what their dog does for them. the service dog field is not very well regulated and just anyone could start up a service dog organization with a client base. Just look at the crazy dogs we have dealt with before they became the wonderful companions they are or were before retirement? would you have thought Jetta or Cessna were part of an actual program that was regulated if you had seen them with someone walking down the road, that wasn't you or I? Someday I might train my own service dog, should this not be allowed? Just my thoughts :)Brooke, Cessna, Canyon & Roguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14249788764859520347noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19662648.post-1927344644958597612010-10-14T04:35:54.353+01:002010-10-14T04:35:54.353+01:00You're right they probably should have.
